Dark Zen?
71The dark side
Well I looked around and found a site called Dark zen. The Wanderling presents this site and it is worth investigating as I found he was in my estimation light years beyond my own simple editorializing. The scope of the question asked to me about using dark emotion in meditation prompted me to hit the resource bank that I have here at home and the simplest way to go at this subject is to begin by refering to instances where some dark sorcerer in history attacked a monastic. Or to get accuracy for this questions nature, However the question deserves an honest answer so indeed yes. There are literally thousands of instances where the misuse of Zen has caused hardship or grief. Trancendental meditation has seen perversion into a weapons program, and even reports of killings by out of body explorers who saw great potential to misuse the tools. Now observe I said the tools of meditation. You cannot misuse Zen, Or Buddhism as these are actually philosophical traditions that have tenets and precepts. Now when I said the misuse of zen I should honestly say yes for a short time even zen had a cause to use these tools for fighting and the result was Shaolin, History speaks that it was not traditional Zen but an ancestor so I will simply call it zen for arguments sake. Now the Shaolin are good monks and in no way do I mean to say that they are not. But the beginning of Shaolin was a cooperative effort between soldiers and monks who exchanged ideas and trainings. Modern practices do still exist and the practice seems to have mostly remained the same. I would trade my many years of martial arts for three good years of Shaolin training. Then perhaps I would not have had to make those pursuits separate. Ninjitsu has many similar meditative practices that are applied to its training and the results are very good, but even they bring contemplative meditation, not always but it is the main thrust of the spiritual side. As I search for the Dark side of this subject I find A juicy meditation that focuses on raising emotional intensity, This would be a useful topic for re-connecting and I will share it later. Training in Fox Zen seems a likely place to start, A story about a fox guarding a corpse, (that would be saying clever things without any insight) But yes this story actually is on the Dark Zen page as well. Well Mr. Vandal all I can offer you is this advice Start by reading the sutras and shastras, there are clues to what traditions held fell practices, and some of those traditions are discussed in forums around central china, The best advice for following this course of study is to master yogic meditation and maybe walking meditation before you attempt it as the Dark stuff is very physical in nature. Take lots of time in researching it first and be as safe as you can on a dark road at night, I hope you find this information helpful and lean away from the internal alchemy as misuse of those practices would be devastating to your health. For the casual reader it (alternative focus zen) has potential though and Mr. Vandal is being quite clever to consider its practice, maybe if he updates me I will share his progress.
Further research into this subject
This is a follow up set of notes for Villain Vandal Who I do know personally and who has disclosed to me the reason for the interest. His own course of study is not surprisingly physics which has a lot to do with zen as well and he has theories about quantum physics and quantum mechanics that seem to suggest to him that the universe may respond to emotional instability differently than it does to stability. I agree with this reasoning somewhat but it seems more that it is a stable universe paradox, for the universe isn't stable except in its instability. The fields of gravity and electromagnetic fluctuations, the materials that are all visible to us now, and the theories by even the most prominent physicists all point to the same things, That the stable environments of time and space are held together by the vibration causing ripples that should reasonably tear "it" apart. This is like the meditation on stillness within motion. The insight is like this, we sit still but we are in motion always, the breath the heartbeat the motion of the atoms and at the lowest level the energy. (this does not require a Dark Side of Zen to observe) Thanks Villain for the ideas that we are sharing here I believe others will learn from it. So reader to master zen you may want to also read a little about Physics and physical science. Thanks again for reading.

Hi Brian,
Rather than shaolin martial arts which I admit engulf many of the other systems - especially if you study at least two forms such as dragon and tiger. However they are by and large hard styles; and a softer style such as Tai chi I believe to be more beneficial for us meditators.
I myself used to study karate but I was fortunate enough to meet someone who taught me a form of Bagua Zhang. This internal style complemented my contemplative work as I could keep my intensity of concentration for longer periods.
I was told to do stting meditation and when I went through dry periods or I couldn't stop the mind from wandering I was to get up and do Bagua and a kind of walking meditation until I was once more in control. Then to go back to sitting....anyway as a fellow martial artist I'm sure you must have looked into the arts of Wudang....
thanks for the understanding. you really are doing a great job.
sorry i'm lost at zen. can you explain it a little better? would like to understand but it's almost like trying to read greek i just don't get it. you asked for honesty and you got it. this would be a great topic if maybe you took more time to fully explain these words that some of us(lame) people don't know. keep writing though i think you're off to a great start.
Well that was enlightening. Thanks for publishing!
Thank you very much for this hub. I have asked countless people about dark zen and got very little feedback, but you have very good advice. I will search for fox zen now :)

Call me sentimental, Ashmi, for me shaolin is like a grandfather of style, if not perfect for being outdated. But think about the origin of the styles, and what they were to the monks who, completely depended on that art for the defense of all they knew. I cannot disagree that other arts may be superior somehow, but I would be a shaolin. (but I truthfully would not survive the training)
